Even with no points to counter at kickoff, the Netherlands could hope to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Euro by beating the Portugal with a two-goal gap. It did not happen. It is actually the Portuguese who qualify after a 2-1 victory well deserved. The Dutch did try to deceive early in the game, opening the score in the 11th minute with a beautiful curling shot from Van der Vaart. But Ronaldo signed his wake in this Euro, scoring both goals of the Selecao (28th, 74th). Without an excellent Stekelenburg, and the misfortune of the Real Madrid striker who hit the post twice, the bill would have been even more salty for the men of Van Marwijk.
Big surprise, therefore, the Oranje leave the competition without honor, with zero points. The finalists of the last World Cup, despite an impressive attack on paper (Van Persie, Van der Vaart, Robben, Sneijder, Affelay, Huntelaar), return home with only two goals scored in three games. The Portuguese on the other hand will meet the Czech Republic, first of Group A in the quarterfinals.
