LONDON 2012 Semi-final...

hope soloUSA v Canada
Since the introduction of women’s football into the Olympics back in 1996, USA has competed in every gold medal match and it seems likely that they will continue their impressive record in the sport as they take on northern rivals Canada in a crunch semi-final match. The two sides have played each other twice this year and on both occasions the Americans comfortably defeated the Canucks.

USA has huge attacking pedigree with players like Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan and they will be able to create chances fairly easily as they face a confident but average Canadian defence. However, if USA leaves spaces open for the Canadian’s to exploit, Canada has the talent to hurt their rivals. Christine Sinclair and Melissa Tancredi are top draw players and are able to deliver effective counter punches if they are offered the chance. USA must ensure they are not over eager to go forward due to Canada’s attacking potency.

Players to look out for:

Hope Solo- the American goalkeeper has made lots of noise and has stated that she and her back four have not been tested. If the Canucks can challenge the outspoken goalkeeper, it will be interesting to see how she responds.

Christine Sinclair- she offers a certain x factor to an average Canadian team and if she is provided with space and opportunities to attack the USA goal, she will be hard to stop.

Predictions- expect the USA to take part in yet another gold medal match as they brush aside a hard working Canada.
