FLAMINI OUT FOR AT LEAST FIVE MONTHS

Mathieu Flamini, AC Milan’s French international midfield player, is likely to be sidelined for at least the first half of the Serie A season because of a knee injury.

The 27-year-old has been ruled out for a minimum of five months after suffering ligament damage to his right knee in last Monday’s 2-1 victory over Juventus in the Luigi Berlusconi Trophy.

Flamini, a member of the squad who won the Italian title last season, will have to have an operation on the knee to repair the injury.

Coincidentally the Rossoneri strengthened their midfield earlier this week with the signing of Alberto Aquilani on a season-long loan from Liverpool.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has stated that Aquilani will be the club’s last signing before the transfer window closes on Wednesday, despite Flamini’s injury.

BOLTON REJECT ARSENAL'S CAHILL BID

Arsenal’s first attempt at strengthening their squad after the sale of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri has failed, with Bolton turning down an offer for their England defender, Gary Cahill.

Indeed, Bolton boss Owen Coyle described the Gunners’ bid for the 25-year-old centre-back – thought to be valued at around £17million - as “derisory”.
The offer has been reported as £6million, but Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisted on Friday that it was more than that.

The Gunners received around £29million from Barcelona for Spain midfielder Fabregas and about £25million for France midfield player Nasri from Manchester City.

The Gunners are in need of reinforcements in the midde of their defence because of injuries to Frenchmen Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci.

The London club have already had a £12million offer rejected for another England centre-back in Everton’s Phil Jagielka.

SPANISH PLAYERS’ STRIKE IS OFF...

The Spanish players’ strike, which forced the opening weekend of the Primera Liga to be postponed  last week, is over.

The Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) and the Professional Football League (LFP) finally reached agreement at their seventh meeting, which started on Wednesday night and finished on Thursday after nearly 12 hours of talks.

There were several issues at stake, but the main one was over 43 million euros of unpaid wages, with around 200 players affected in the Liga’s top two divisions.

The AFE wanted a guarantee from the LFP that players’ salaries would be paid if clubs went bankrupt and they have now received that, as well as an assurance that players would be released if they were not paid.

The LFP now have to find a new date for last weekend’s postponed programme.

WENGER IS BANNED AGAIN

Arsene Wenger’s troubles increased on Monday when the Arsenal manager was suspended for two further matches by UEFA for breaching the conditions of his previous ban by European football’s governing body.

UEFA felt that the Frenchman had communicated with his team at last Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier against Udinese at the Emirates Stadium when he was not allowed to do so.
The suspension follows Saturday’s home Premier League defeat by Liverpool, the sale of captain and midfield general Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, and a series of injuries and red cards from their first two league games of the season.

The Gunners have also been fined 10,000 euros for improper conduct by their officials against Udinese, but they are to appeal against the fine and Wenger’s suspension.

WENGER FINALLY PREPARED TO SPEND BIG AT ARSENAL...

Arsene Wenger has said he is ready to spend the money raised by the sale of four of his front-line players during the summer. The Arsenal manager has seen Cesc Fabregas, Gael Cliché and Emmanuel Eboue leave the Emirates Stadium and it seems almost certain Samir Nasri will move to Manchester City. The clubs have agreed a £25m deal for the midfielder.
Those sales would raise around £70m for the club, who are not certain to qualify for the Champions League after a narrow 1-0 first-leg victory over Udinese in London. Some at Arsenal have criticised their manager for not buying top-range footballers to meet the challenge of Manchester City and Manchester United.
However, Wenger argued he was prepared to spend £30m on a single player. “I will even pay £40m if the right footballer was available,” he said. “I have a false reputation for not wanting to buy expensive players but I will not spend money on average footballers.”..

WHO WILL WIN THE SCUDETTO THIS SEASON? ...

AC Milan broke Inter’s dominance of Serie A last season, Planetfootball360 looks at the frontrunners in the race for the 2011-12 Italian league title.
Milan brought in a new manager, Massimiliano Allegri, and signed several players including Robinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic and to win back the Scudetto last season.
The club are still in the process of rebuilding their ageing squad but hope they can continue to develop while retaining the league.
They will face competition from city rivals, Inter Milan, who struggled with managerial problems last season. And, Juventus will be strong contenders again after falling away after injuries to key players last term.
Of the chasing pack, Napoli, Udinese and Palermo made great improvements last season and will have the experience to challenge despite the loss of star players lie Alexis Sanchez and Javier Pastore.
This season’s dark horse could be Roma who have invested heavily in players including Bojan Krkic, Gabriel Heinze and Marteen Stekelnburg.

HAS WENGER GOT HIS PRIORITIES RIGHT?

After claiming that Arsenal would make a ‘super quality’ signing this week, the arrival of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has left fans frustrated with Arsene Wenger.

There is no doubting the Southampton teenager, signed for a rising fee of £15m, has great potential. He can play as a fast paced winger or more centrally – but, for now, he remains another untested youngster to add to Wenger’s collection.
