The SuperCup goes to Real Madrid

Real Madrid won their ninth Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday night against FC Barcelona. While the first leg had turned in favour of the Catalans, Madrid were able to stand up to their opponents by winning the match two goals to one.
Higuain took advantage of an mistake of Mascherano to open the scoring in the 11th minute. Barely ten minutes later, Cristano Ronaldo eliminates Piqué with a beautiful back heel flick and tricks Valdes to score the second goal. Unfortunately bad luck continues for Barca who find themselves down to ten men after less than thirty minutes due to a foul by Adriano on Ronaldo who was running toward the goal. Just before half time, Messi gives hope to the Catalans by scoring a superb free-kick goal but this is not enough.
It is during this captivating and without tensions Clasico that Luka Modric and Alex Song could make their debuts for their respective clubs.

Luka Modric finally at Real Madrid ....

luca modricAfter several weeks of incessant rumours, Luka Modric has finally arrived in the Spanish capital to undergo the traditional medical and formalize the transfer. The 26-year-old left Tottenham to sign a five-year contracy with Real Madrid for an amount, rumours say, of 35 million euros.
Today at the press conference, the Croatian midfielder did not miss a chance to praise his new Spanish club: "It is an honour to be able to evolve in the best club in the world. [...] There is the best coach in the world [Jose Mourinho] and the best players." He also showed his ambition to win trophies, including the Champions League.

Ricardo Carvalho moves to QPR on loan...

ricardo carvalhoQPR and Real Madrid have made a deal that will see Ricardo Carvalho move to Loftus Road on a season loan. The Portuguese international has not agreed to all personal terms as of yet but he is likely to make a decision with the next 2 days. If he does join QPR, he will team up with Michael Dawson who moved from White Hart Lane to Loftus Road in a transfer deal worth £7.5m.
If Carvalho does agree to the terms, he will be back in London where he once played for Chelsea. More interestingly, he will be re-joined with his former Chelsea teammate Jose Bosingwa.

Manchester City made to fight against brave Saints...

roberto manciniIt was David vs Goliath as Southampton arrived at the Etihad to face the league champions in their opening fixture of the Premier League. What ensued was a riveting game of football in which the newly promoted side almost caused the upset of weekend. However, whilst the Saints were close, they were denied a victory by City in the best game of the season so far.
With 18 minutes to play, the home side found themselves 2-1 down and in desperate need of the display they put on against QPR to grab the trophy away from their greatest rivals. They managed to summon up that spirit and scored 2 goals in quick time to relieve themselves of the embarrassment of losing to a newly promoted side.
It was Samir Nasri who scored the winning goal and he proved to be the Man of the Match for his brilliant play throughout the 90 minutes. He made incisive passes, controlled the midfield and pulled the strings of every major attack Manchester City made.  Nasri would be happy with the nice change in the headlines after attracting a lot of criticism for his behaviour within the French squad.
However, though City has gotten away with a shock to the system, the fate of Sergio Aguero is still to be decided. After a heavy tackle from Nathaniel Clyne, the Argentine landed awkwardly around his knee which saw him get taken off immediately and stretchered off for a scan. Early reports suggest he should be out for weeks, and thankfully not months. The City manager, Mancini, has talked of requiring replacements for the top player. Expect another dip into the transfer market as Mancini aims to find a suitable replacement for his striker.
Nonetheless, Mancini can be pleased with the manner in which Nasri and Tevez played along with the heart of the City midfield, Yaya Toure. The first City goal arrived with a good link up between Nasri and Tevez, as a skilful pass was converted in style by Tevez to give City the initial lead. This was after Tevez was fouled in the penalty area by Jos Hooiveld but David Silva’s poor penalty kick was easily saved by the Southampton goalkeeper.
After the goal, City made numerous chances in front of goal but were unexpectedly poor in their finishing as Southampton were lucky not to concede even more. David Silva endured an ordinary first match back as he hit the crossbar after being teed up by Nasri and Clicy and Dzeko also came close without finding the net.
The Saints made City pay as they made chances of their own and the first of their goals arrived from the substitute Lambert who instilled an injection of pace into the Southampton game and after a wonderful move, Lambert passed a sprawling Joe Hart with an accurate, powerful shot on target.  Then, after a poor pass by Jack Rodwell was intercepted, a quick Southampton counter attack ended with another substitute passing Joe Hart with a top quality finish.  Steven Davis’s shot gave Southampton an unexpected lead with less than 20 minutes to play.
But then the champions truly arrived as Nasri and co made sure they gained three points from their first match at home. First Dzeko scored to bring the scores level after a long ball from Vincent Kompany was met by Balotelli who duly allowed Dzeko to score his first of the season. Then, after poor defending by Southampton, the best player on the pitch scored a deserved winner with a brilliant finish. Nasri scored in style and celebrated in style ashe  greeted the world with message of “Eid Mubarak”. Nasri and his side played entertaining football and in the end were too strong for a brave Southampton side.

Manchester United has its man...

van persieManchester United has reached an agreement with Arsenal for the transfer of Robin van Persie. The Dutch striker left Arsenal to join the Red Devils. An announcement that will shake the world of football!
"I've thought long and hard, and I decided not to extend my contract. You, the fans, have the full right not to agree with my point of view and I respect your opinions. "The announcement of Robin Van Persie on his official website on July 4 had the effect of a bomb. By refusing to extend his contract which ends in June 2013, the Dutch international striker, the spearhead of the Gunners last season scored 37 goals in 48 matches in all competitions.
Arsene Wenger decided to rake in some money for his club by selling his most valuable asset to Manchester United. "Manchester United is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with Arsenal for the transfer of Robin Van Persie. The official arrival of the player is subjected to the traditional medical and administrative details. A further announcement will be published shortly. "Meanwhile, Arsenal also confirmed the departure of RVP, indicating that he will be in Manchester tomorrow to finalize details of his arrival. The transfer fee is predicted to be around € 28 million.
Financially, the transaction appears to be very profitable for a player aged 29 who was acquired in 2004 for € 4.5 million from Feyenoord who only had a one year contract. In sporting terms, the loss is enormous and could undermine the strategy the London club had in the transfer market.  With Arsenal unable to stop the departure of Van Persie, the pill may be hard to swallow for fans that have already seen major players like Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy and Cesc Fabregas leaving.

Bayern dominated Dortmund...

bayern munchenThis is a title that will not replace of the failure of the Championship (2nd place), nor the Cup (finalist) in the spirit of Munich. But after a season ended empty-handed, Bayern returned to the path of a title on Sunday by winning the Super Cup at the Allianz Arena against Dortmund (2-1). And never mind that the Bavarians had the right to play this trophy as the place for a dolphin who Borussia won everything last season. Jupp Heynckes's men managed to impose their face training a team they no longer had dominated since February 2010 (five games).
Their victory, the Bavarians have built in the first half, and even starting a game perfectly. At the sixth minute, Mandzukic, one of the few recruits were, opened the scoring by taking a precise center of Ribery (1-0). Five minutes later, Mueller doubled the lead in concluding action Robben (2-0). Two goal differences after eleven minutes of play, Jürgen Klopp's men would take time to recover from this disastrous starts. More exactly one period. It was only after the break as the defending champions rediscovered their shimmering Thurs.
But Lewandowski (48th, 67th), Reus (51st) and Hummels (53) failed to surprise Neuer. Lewandowski could not find the threads of a curling shot (2-1) only a quarter of an hour after the game. Too late to put pressure on Munich who wanted to finally overcome their nemesis in two weeks of the resumption of the Bundesliga. Robben (65th, 83rd) was very close twice to kill the match. Whatever the difference, the important thing was for Bayern to find victory. And Vibrant Faces of the Bavarians during the trophy ceremony show that this meeting was more than a preseason game.

Manchester United lose on penalties to Barcelona...

barcelona teamA match which had two strong teams play in glamorous surroundings turned out to be a dull affair as the full time score ended 0-0.  Manchester Utd had a chance to take a lead in the first half as they forced a foul from the Catalans in the penalty box. But Rooney didn’t convert the penalty chance and that turned out to his last contribution of the match.
However, with the talent on display, there was no real contest and the contest had to go to penlaties which turned out to be eventful but certainly not impressive. Nani and Young both missed for United which left Pique to score and give Barcelona the friendly win.

South Korea humbled by awesome Brazil

brazil squadSouth Korea found themselves up against a Olympic favourites Brazil and were never in the match as the South American giants made easy work of the Koreans to win 3-0 to keep their bid to win a first Olympic tournament alive.
Romulo scored the first goal of the match in the 38th minute before it became the Leandro Damiao show as he scored 2 second half goals in front of a 69,389 crowd.  The tournament’s top goal scorer said, "I'm so happy, we have made a huge effort to reach the final. We are here to win the gold medal - it was a tough match but we are a great team. We are Brazil - we are here for the gold."
Brazil has now won all 5 matches and it will be difficult to see Mexico denying the Brazilians a first gold medal in the Olympic Games.
But for the first 38 minutes, the Koreans were stubborn, defending doggedly and showing the crowd why they only conceded 2 goals during the tournament but when Neymar started to get threatening South Korea seemed to have no answers. The Brazilian playmaker was imperious and when he found Romulo the match seemed over already.
Neymar continued to dominate in midfield and in the 57th minute Damiao benefited from his play to score Brazil’s second goal. Seven minutes later the striker took advantage of poor Korean defending to score his second and Brazil’s third.
The Brazilian’s will now play Mexico in the final and aim to finally gain gold at the Olympics.

LONDON 2012 Semi-final...

hope soloUSA v Canada
Since the introduction of women’s football into the Olympics back in 1996, USA has competed in every gold medal match and it seems likely that they will continue their impressive record in the sport as they take on northern rivals Canada in a crunch semi-final match. The two sides have played each other twice this year and on both occasions the Americans comfortably defeated the Canucks.

USA has huge attacking pedigree with players like Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan and they will be able to create chances fairly easily as they face a confident but average Canadian defence. However, if USA leaves spaces open for the Canadian’s to exploit, Canada has the talent to hurt their rivals. Christine Sinclair and Melissa Tancredi are top draw players and are able to deliver effective counter punches if they are offered the chance. USA must ensure they are not over eager to go forward due to Canada’s attacking potency.

Players to look out for:

Hope Solo- the American goalkeeper has made lots of noise and has stated that she and her back four have not been tested. If the Canucks can challenge the outspoken goalkeeper, it will be interesting to see how she responds.

Christine Sinclair- she offers a certain x factor to an average Canadian team and if she is provided with space and opportunities to attack the USA goal, she will be hard to stop.

Predictions- expect the USA to take part in yet another gold medal match as they brush aside a hard working Canada.

France become the first nation to reach semi finals...

france swedenThe French women’s team have become the first nation to book themselves a place in the semi-final of the Olympics with a 2-1 defeat over Sweden.  They were the better side and will now look forward to a match up with either Brazil or Japan.  However, Sweden will exit the tournament disappointed after they took the lead in the 18thminute from a corner from which Fischer duly converted. Replays showed that the goal came from her shoulder rather than her head but the Swedes were happy to take a deserved lead nonetheless. There was an immediate response from the French and they thought they found the net 3 minutes later only for Delie to be found offside when crossing the ball in to Gaetane Thiney.  However, the match was open to good play and Sweden had an excellent opportunity to go 2-0 up when Marie Hammarstrom found Lisa Dahlkvist open eight yards from goal but the striker could only head the ball straight to the French goalkeeper, Bouhaddi.
The missed opportunity was costly for the Swedes as 3 minutes later in the 29th minute, France equalised from a corner which Sweden were unable to deal with.  Swedish keeper Lindahl could not catch a simple shot and it proved to be a big mistake as Laura Georges took advantage and brought the scores level.  And just on the stroke of half time, France took the lead with another set-piece. The free kick was fizzed into the Swedish box where Laura Georges headed the ball across goal to allow Wendy Renard to smash the ball into the back of the net after Sweden could not clear the ball on two occasions.
In the second half, the style of play was more defensive as France aimed to consolidate their lead and it was France who had the opportunity to confirm their place in the semi-finals but Abily, brought on as a substitute, had her shot cleared on the line by Svensson. There were no further chances in the half due to brilliant French defensive play and whilst Sweden were desperate in attack, they never looked likely to draw level.
France will now look forward to a semi-final and seem very likely of winning a medal if they continue to play with the solidity they showed against the Swedes.

Robin Van Persie has a difficult choice...

van persie

Roberto Mancini very rarely doesn’t attract a player to his club these days but the case of Robin Van Persie is an obvious anomaly. But as he himself says, the competition is tough. "When you talk to Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus, it is difficult for a player to choose between these three clubs. These are great teams and I have no idea what will happen with him. "The latest news from England is unlikely to reassure him. Among the three suitors, it is Juventus who seems determined attract the Dutchman to Italy.
As stated by the Daily Mirror, Juventus have posed the highest offer of 90 million € of which 25 million € will be given to meet the financial demands of Arsenal. The remaining 65 million € will be spent on the player with a weekly net play of 243,000 euros and a contract lasting upto 5 years.
Eager to enlist the services of a renowned goalscorer, Juve are most likely to sign Van Persie who turns 29 in August. In addition, statements by the player's father, are encouraging for the side from Turin. He has stated that his son would not be willing to play for another English club. However, don’t expect the Manchester clubs to give up on signing the striker just yet.
