France become the first nation to reach semi finals...

france swedenThe French women’s team have become the first nation to book themselves a place in the semi-final of the Olympics with a 2-1 defeat over Sweden.  They were the better side and will now look forward to a match up with either Brazil or Japan.  However, Sweden will exit the tournament disappointed after they took the lead in the 18thminute from a corner from which Fischer duly converted. Replays showed that the goal came from her shoulder rather than her head but the Swedes were happy to take a deserved lead nonetheless. There was an immediate response from the French and they thought they found the net 3 minutes later only for Delie to be found offside when crossing the ball in to Gaetane Thiney.  However, the match was open to good play and Sweden had an excellent opportunity to go 2-0 up when Marie Hammarstrom found Lisa Dahlkvist open eight yards from goal but the striker could only head the ball straight to the French goalkeeper, Bouhaddi.
The missed opportunity was costly for the Swedes as 3 minutes later in the 29th minute, France equalised from a corner which Sweden were unable to deal with.  Swedish keeper Lindahl could not catch a simple shot and it proved to be a big mistake as Laura Georges took advantage and brought the scores level.  And just on the stroke of half time, France took the lead with another set-piece. The free kick was fizzed into the Swedish box where Laura Georges headed the ball across goal to allow Wendy Renard to smash the ball into the back of the net after Sweden could not clear the ball on two occasions.
In the second half, the style of play was more defensive as France aimed to consolidate their lead and it was France who had the opportunity to confirm their place in the semi-finals but Abily, brought on as a substitute, had her shot cleared on the line by Svensson. There were no further chances in the half due to brilliant French defensive play and whilst Sweden were desperate in attack, they never looked likely to draw level.
France will now look forward to a semi-final and seem very likely of winning a medal if they continue to play with the solidity they showed against the Swedes.
