RANIERI WILL NOT QUIT INTER...

claudio ranieriClaudio Ranieri has insisted he will not quit as manager of Internazionale, despite a disastrous run of form that has seen them lose seven of their last eight matches. It is a worse sequence than the four defeats from five games that saw Ranieri’s predecessor, Gian Piero Gasperini, dismissed at the start of the season. Ranieri had succeeded in mounting a recovery but although they are still seventh in Serie A, their latest defeat, a 1-0 loss to Napoli, leaves Inter nine points adrift of the Champions League places. The Inter president, Massimo Moratti, has given Ranieri his backing and having gone through three other managers – Rafael Benitez, Leonardo and Gasperini – since Jose Mourinho led them to the European Cup in 2010, it would be embarrassing to have to appoint another.

Marseille scored with the last kick of the game to defeat Inter Milan 1-0 in their Champions League meeting at the Stade Velodrome.
Andre Ayew rose to header in from a corner in the final minute of extra-time to condemn Inter to their sixth defeat in seven games.
The Serie A side started slowly but grew in confidence and had the closest chance of the first-half when Wesley Sneijder fed Esteban Cambiasso, although the linesman wrongly called offside.
L’OM came out fighting in the second-half as Ayew had a succession of chances before winning the corner that he eventually scored from.
The result will place even more pressure on under-fire Inter coach Claudio Ranieri after a fourth straight defeat for the 2010 Champions League winners.

BAYERN CONFIDENT ON ROBBEN

rubbenBundesliga giants Bayern Munich are confident that Arjen Robben will sign a new deal to stay at the club.
The Dutch forward’s contract does not expire until 2013 but, with Basel winger Xherdan Shaqiri expected to arrive next season, there have been rumours that Robben could be sold to generate funds in the summer.
The 28-year-old started his Bayern career in spectacular fashion after joining from Real Madrid in 2009. However, he has suffered a succession of injuries in recent seasons while Franz Beckenbauer and Mario Basler have criticised him for being ‘too selfish’.
However, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz-Rummenigge believes he will stay at the club – while also comparing Bastian Schweinsteiger to Barcelona’s Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

DORTMUND MARCH ON, BAYERN SLIDE ...

borussia dortmund
A fabulous overhead kick from Kevin Grosskreutz put Borussia Dortmund three points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. Grosskreutz’s goal was the difference between the German champions and Hertha Berlin who having appointed the veteran, Otto Rehhagel, as their new manager, slumped to a fifth successive defeat. Dortmund are unbeaten in 16 league matches. The new year crisis at Bayern Munich continued as they were held to a goalless draw by bottom club Freiburg to leave them in third place, behind Borussia Monchengladbach, although their 2-1 win at Kaiserslautern was marred by the loss of goalscorer, Patrick Hermann, who suffered a broken collarbone. In other games, Bayer Leverkusen showed no after-effects from their defeat by Barcelona in the Champions League with a 4-1 win against Augsburg while Werder Bremen overcame their neighbours, Hamburg, 3-1.

MANCHESTER UNITED VICTORY COMES AT A PRICE  ...

valencia
Manchester United’s 2-0 Europa League victory over Ajax was overshadowed by an injury to Antonio Valencia that is likely to sideline the winger for the next month. Valencia, who has been the English champions outstanding player this season, set up the first goal for Ashley Young before being taken off in a comfortable victory, sealed by Javier Hernandez’s third goal for Manchester United in as many games. However, it might have been more in a match against an Ajax side that has been riven by internal disputes and which has one only one match in the Eredivisie since the turn of the year. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side will almost certainly progress to the next round where they will meet either Lokomotiv Moscow or Athletic Bilbao.

RUSSIAN DOOR OPEN FOR CAPELLO ...

fabio capelloFormer England coach Fabio Capello could make an immediate return to management with Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.
The Italian resigned as England manager after feeling undermined by the FA’s decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy over a race row with Anton Ferdinand.
The 65-year-old had previously stated managing England would be his last job in football - but it appears the premature ending and lure of a lucrative contract with the rich Russian club could change his mind.
Anzhi head coach Yuri Krasnozhan resigned yesterday after only two months in charge, which could open the door for Capello.
Bankrolled by a billionaire owner, the Russian side have attracted star players including Samuel Eto’o, Roberto Carlos and Yuri Zhirkov in recent seasons.
Capello has been linked to a return to Italy with Inter Milan but insists his next job will not be in his home country.

FERGUSON CALLS SUAREZ A DISGRACE ...

suarez and evraSir Alex Ferguson has launched a furious attack on Luis Suarez saying the Uruguayan striker should never play for Liverpool again. Speaking after Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool, Ferguson said Suarez was a “disgrace to his club” for refusing to shake hands with Patrice Evra before the game. The Manchester United manager said the gesture “could have caused a riot” at an already tense fixture. He also criticised Evra for dancing in front of Suarez on the final whistle. The match was decided by two goals from Wayne Rooney immediately after half time and, although Suarez found the net late on, it was not enough to give Liverpool a point. Manchester United moved a point clear of Manchester City, who face Aston Villa on Sunday, at the top of the Premier League.

CAPELLO RULES OUT INTER SWITCH ...

fabio capelloFabio Capello has said he has no intention of joining Internazionale as their manager despite speculation that he engineered his own departure from the FA in order to return to Italian club football. The 65-year-old returned to his home in Lugano, Switzerland, saying that the one thing he was looking forward to was a complete break from the sport. The Inter president, Massimo Moratti, also confirmed that despite increasing pressure on his manager, Claudio Ranieri, he would not be looking to offer Capello a post at San Siro. Sir Alex Ferguson, meanwhile, has warned the FA against offering Harry Redknapp the job on a part-time basis saying that when he tried to combine the jobs of managing Scotland and Aberdeen in 1986, he “found it very difficult”.

CRUYFF WINS BATTLE AGAINST VAN GAAL ...

yohan cruffJohan Cruyff has won the latest round in his bitter battle with Louis van Gaal at Ajax. Cruyff, who is a director of the Amsterdam club, obtained a court ruling that Van Gaal, who managed the club to the European Cup in 1995, cannot join him on the board. The court ruled that Cruyff, who has been a fierce critic of Van Gaal, had been absent when the proposal was made. This is just the latest instalment of a disastrous season for the Dutch champions that saw them eliminated from the Champions League on goal difference after Lyon’s 7-1 win in Zagreb while their promising midfielder, Ouasim Buoy, opted to join Juventus in the transfer window. In addition, the Eredivisie’s highest paid player, Mounir el Hamadoui, has said he will not play for the club again.

SUAREZ RETURNS BUT LIVERPOOL HELD ...

luiz suarezLuis Suarez returned for Liverpool after his eight-game ban but could not force a breakthrough against Tottenham. The Uruguayan striker, who has not played since December after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra, came on as a second-half substitute in a goalless draw at Anfield. The London side, who are now seven points behind leaders Manchester City, were without their manager, Harry Redknapp, whose flight to Liverpool was cancelled because of fog at Heathrow. The game was interrupted by a cat coming on to the pitch but, although they created more chances, Liverpool were unable to clinch victory.
In La Liga, Granada climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win over Malaga at Los Carmenes. A late goal from Inigo Lopez gave the home side victory while Martin Demichelis was sent off for Malaga.

 PSG SET FOR BIG-SPENDING SUMMER...

psg teamParis St Germain plan a host of summer signings, their manager, Carlo Ancelotti revealed. In order to prepare the club for a return to the Champions League, the PSG manager said he expected them to spend heavily. Ancelotti said that, if as expected, Real Madrid allow Kaka to leave the Bernabeu, he would be interested in a reunion with the Brazilian midfielder with whom he won the European Cup in 2007 with AC Milan. Ancelotti also said that, even though it would be difficult to accommodate Kaka at the Parc des Princes because PSG already had Javier Pastore he would be in favour of the transfer. Despite the fact that they failed to sign Alexandre Pato in the January transfer window, Ancelotti said they may not try again in the summer, arguing they were now following another Brazilian striker. Leandro Damiao, from Internacional Porto Alegre.

MESSI MISSES PENALTY TO GIVE VALENCIA HOPE OF FINAL ...

lionel messiLionel Messi saw his penalty saved to deny Barcelona victory in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final at Valencia.
The two sides drew 1-1 at the Mestalla but Barcelona could have snatched victory when Miguel brought down Thiago Alcantara. However, Valencia’s keeper, Diego Alves, parried Messi’s shot.
Barca were denied another opportunity for a winner when Daniel Alves hit the post. Nevertheless, the Barcelona manager, Pep Guardiola, said this was the best display against Valencia he had seen since coming back to the club four years ago. Valencia had taken the lead in front of their own supporters through Jonas only for Carles Puyol to equalise.
The winners are likely to face Athletic Bilbao in the final. The 23-times winners overcame third-division Mirandes 2-1 and will face them again in the San Mames.
