FUCILE RED CARD LEADS TO PORTO DEFEAT ....

Porto suffered their first ever defeat in Russia on Wednesday as they went down 3-1 to Zenit St Petersburg in the Champions League.

The Portuguese and Europa League champions were punished for the 45th minute dismissal of Uruguayan right-back Jorge Fucile for two yellow cards.

Up to that point the match was even, with James Rodriguez’s early goal being cancelled out by Roman Shirokov’s deflected shot.

However, once Fucile was sent off, Zenit took command, Shirokov’s second goal and Danny’s tap-in sealing their first Group G win.

Apoel Nicosia lead the section after drawing 1-1 at Shakhtar Donetsk, Jadson equalising Ivan Trickovski’s surprise opening goal for the Cypriots.

NOW RANIERI NEEDS CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WIN....

With new coach Claudio Ranieri having guided Inter Milan to their first Serie A win of the season at the weekend at Bologna, he now needs three more points in the Champions League on Tuesday night against CSKA Moscow.

Failure to gain any reward from their Group B trip to Russia could lead to an early exit for Inter, as they surprisingly lost their opening game 1-0 at home to competition debutants Trabzonspor.
It will not be easy, though, as Ranieri will be without Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder, Brazilian full-back Maicon, Uruguay striker Diego Forlan and Serbian midfielder Dejan Stankovic because of injury.

Manchester United will also be missing their playmaker, Wayne Rooney, on Tuesday because of injury for their Group C match at home to Basel, but the English champions should secure their first victory in this season’s competition.

MATA’S DIFFICULT RETURN TO VALENCIA...

Chelsea winger Juan Mata faces what he has called a “very special” and “emotional” match when he returns to Valencia on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

The Spanish international only left the Mestalla last month for £23.5million, having spent four years at Valencia, for whom he scored 46 goals in 174 games.

Mata has already found the net for Chelsea in Group E, helping the London club to a 2-0 home win over Bayer Leverkusen which lifted the Blues to the top of the section.

They will be optimistic of staying there this week, as they have won 2-1 on their two previous trips to the Mestalla, both of which took place in 2007. Also, Valencia’s unbeaten start to the season was ended by a 1-0 loss at Sevilla on Saturday.

AJAX LOOKING FOR REVENGE OVER REAL...

Ajax will be hoping to turn back the clock when they take on Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night in a meeting of two of European football’s most successful clubs.

Between them they have captured the European Cup 13 times, with Real well ahead on nine titles. The Spanish side also have a better record in the clubs’ recent meetings, having won both last season’s Champions League matches without conceding a goal.

But Ajax lead their head-to-head 4-3 overall with one game drawn and will be looking to take advantage of Real coach Jose Mourinho’s touchline ban for the Group D match, Marcelo’s suspension after his red card in the 1-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb two weeks ago and injuries to defenders Pepe and Fabio Coentrao.

BOATENG HAS POINT TO PROVE TO CITY...

Jerome Boateng will be aiming to show Manchester City they made a mistake in letting him join Bayern Munich during the summer when the sides clash in Group A of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Germany defender left City for 13.5million euros in July after an injury-hit season in which he made just 16 Premier League appearances and few in his preferred position of centre-back.

That is the place Boateng is likely to occupy at the Allianz Arena against City, after playing a part in an outstanding start to the season for Bayern, who have conceded just one goal in their opening 11 matches and won the last eight.

With the Bundesliga leaders having lost only once at home to English opposition in European competition – to Norwich in the old UEFA Cup in 1993 – City face a massive task to make up for their 1-1 home draw against Napoli two weeks ago.

REST OF EUROPE: ANOTHER FAIRYTALE FINISH FOR LEVANTE....

La Liga’s great fairytale continued when Levante, one of the Spanish league’s most impoverished clubs, won their third successive match to go level on points with Barcelona.
Having already beaten Real Madrid, Levante easily overcame Espanyol in the Ciutat de Valencia stadium in a game that saw the visitors reduced to nine men before the finish. Levante took the lead through two penalties converted by Ruben Suarez and, although Hector Moreno pulled a goal back for Espanyol ,the game was finished when Jose Barkero scored Levante’s third.
The crisis surrounding Real Mallorca’s manager, Michael Laudrup, eased when his side recovered from an early setback to overcome Real Sociedad 2-1 at La Anoeta. Sociedad had taken an early lead on their own ground through Imanol Agirretxe against a Mallorca side that had lost their last three games without scoring a goal.
Another defeat might have made Laudrup’s position untenable. However, they recovered through Victor Casadesus and scored the winner through Gonzalo Castro five minutes into the second half, although Mallorca needed the crossbar to stop Agirretxe from equalising.
Elsewhere in Europe Helsingborg became champions of Sweden for the seventh time, although they needed a fightback by their bitter rivals Malmo to secure their first title since 1999. Having beaten GAIS 3-1, Helsingborg went 11 points clear of second-placed AIK Stockholm who had four matches remaining and were facing Malmo in the late kick-off on Sunday night. Stockholm looked to have secured the win at Malmo that would have kept the championship alive but conceded a late equaliser to Malmo’s Mathias Ranegie.

STEVEN GERRARD IS NOT LIVERPOOL’S SAVIOUR

steven gerrard liverpoolSteven Gerrard is ready to return from a six-month lay-off through injury although he may not alone be the answer to Liverpool’s stumbling form.
Gerrard has not played since the 3-1 victory over Manchester United in March and has undergone a groin operation.
He is due to return to the Liverpool squad for the League Cup fixture against Brighton on Wednesday.
However, his manager, Kenny Dalglish said that his return will not necessarily mean an uplift in the club’s form.
Liverpool have lost their last two matches and Gerrard’s form last season was the poorest since he made his first-team debut at Anfield in 1998.
Gerrard is 31 and no longer quite the footballer he was. There was a time when he could have inspired Liverpool on his own but Dalglish has warned he needs more support from his team-mates.

REAL MADRID SHOCKED BY LEVANTE

zinedine zidane real madridReal Madrid missed their chance to take the advantage over Barcelona after a shock loss to Levante in La Liga.
In a game they should have won, Real could have gone two points clear of the defending champions – instead, Barcelona are now a point ahead of their main rivals following their 8-0 humiliation of Osasuna.
Jose Mourinho felt confident enough to leave Cristiano Ronaldo out of the starting line up but Real struggled after Sami Khedira was sent off for a second yellow card on 41-minutes.
Arouna Kone scored the second-half winner and Levante could easier have scored a second as Real chased the game. Ronaldo was sent on to replace Karim Benzema but couldn’t change the result.
Meanwhile, new signing Radamel Falcao scored a hat-trick to help Atletico Madrid earn an impressive 4-0 win against Racing Santander.

BARCA BOUNCE BACK WITH 8-0 WIN

david villaAfter two consecutive draws, Barcelona got back to winning ways by thrashing Osasuna 8-0 in La Liga.
The Catalans answered their critics by putting on an exhibition of beautiful football - only the Osasuna keeper stopped the score from reaching double figures.
Lionel Messi hit a hat-trick, David Villa netted two and Cesc Fabregas was involved in most of the goals, which again questions how competitive the Spanish league is outside of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Real play Levante on Sunday in a game that is likely to involve another high scoreline for Madrid who have already scored 10 goals in their first two games – a win will take them above Valencia at the top of the table.
Cristiano Ronaldo insists that Jose Mourinho will lead the team to either La Liga or the Champions League trophy this season.

PUYOL: BARCA WILL GET BACK TO THEIR BEST

CARLOS PUYOL BARCELONABarcelona resume their La Liga campaign against Osasuna this weekend - with doubts that they are not the same dominant force.
The Spanish champions have drawn their last two games 2-2, despite taking leads against both Real Sociedad and AC Milan.
Critics have claimed that Barca have lost their invincibility, but injuries are the more realistic reason – with Gerard Pique, Alexis Sanchez and now Andres Iniesta sidelined.
However, captain Carlos Puyol is expected to return against Osasuna and insists the Catalans will get back to winning ways.
“We are fine and not listening to what people are saying outside the club,” he said.
Real Madrid will be looking to increase their lead at the top of the table when they play Levante away.
