| ITALY LUCKY TO SCRAPE PAST TINY FAROE ISLANDS |
AC Milan striker and the bad boy of Italian football Antonio Cassano scored the only goal to save his country’s blushes against minnows the Faroe Islands.
The Azzuri are now eight points clear at the top of their group with three games remaining – while they face closest rivals Slovenia in Florence on Tuesday.
With Serie A yet to start following strike action, Italy’s players looked like they lacked match practice in what should have been a routine win.
However, the partnership of Cassano and Villarreal’s Guiseppe Rossi proved too strong for their lowly opponents and the Milan striker opened the scoring in the 11th minute.
To be fair, the Faroe Islands came close to scoring an equalizer on a couple of occasions through Joan Edmundsson and a Christian Holst effort that hit the crossbar.
Italy may be close to sealing their place at the Finals but the former World Cup winners look far from impressive.
