Fernando Torres’ management insist the striker is staying at Chelsea despite reports suggesting a move to big spending Anzhi Makhachkala.

The Russian Premier League side are reportedly ready with a £45million bid for the striker - after having a previous £35million offer rejected.

Anzhi have already used their considerable wealth to lure players such as Roberto Carlos and Samuel Eto'o to the club.

However, the Chelsea striker's representatives, the Bahia International agency, claim that there have been no bids received for the misfiring striker who has struggled to score since moving from Liverpool in a £50million transfer.

They insist that Torres will see out his four-year contract at Stamford Bridge and is 'much happier' after being given more opportunities by Roberto Di Matteo.

THIAGO SILVA NOT LEAVING FOR BARCA...

AC Milan insist that Brazilian defender Thiago Silva will not be sold to Barcelona in the summer.

The 27-year-old has received rave reviews for his performances in Serie A since moving to the Rossoneri from Fluminese in 2009.

Despite being under contract until 2016, reports suggest he is being targeted by a number of European clubs, including the reigning La Liga and Champions League holders.

Barcelona are said to see Silva as the ideal replacement for Carlos Puyol and are keen to partner him with Gerard Pique in the centre of their defence.

However, Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani insists the player is not for sale.

Silva is currently sidelined through injury, meaning he will miss both games of the Champions League quarter-finals against Barcelona.

KALOU TAKES CHELSEA A STEP CLOSER...

Chelsea took a step closer to the Champions League semi-finals with a 1-0 away win against Benfica.

After struggling with congested fixtures in the Premier League, Roberto Di Matteo made several changes to freshen up the team.

Chelsea began the game defensively but their disciplined performance paid off when Fernando Torres set up Salomon Kalou to score an all-important away goal late in the game.

David Luiz was magnificent alongside John Terry against his former club - while Di Matteo made his case for taking over the manager’s job permanently, despite France coach Laurent Blanc being linked with a £6m-a-year contract.

Winning the Champions League may be the only way the Blues qualify for the competition next season, as they have slipped to fifth in the league.

MESSI TOPS FOOTBALL RICH LIST...

Lionel Messi is the world’s most highly paid player, according to France Football’s annual rich list.

The Barcelona forward earned an incredible £27.5m from wages and sponsorship deals last year.

LA Galaxy’s David Beckham, previously the richest player for so long, came in at second on £26.2m while Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo was third with £24.3m.

Real Madrid were represented again by Kaka while Manchester City was the only other club to feature two players in Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure.

The Premier League accounted for four players including Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres.

There was not a single player from Serie A in the top ten while Bayern Munich defender Philipp Lahm was the only player from the Bundesliga.

The top ten was completed by Samuel Eto’o, who is on the world’s highest salary at Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.

MESSI BREAKS ALL-TIME SCORING RECORD...

Lionel Messi has broken Barcelona’s all-time scoring record after netting yet another hat-trick in a 5-3 victory over Granada.

The record of 232 goals was previously held by Cesar Rodriquez – the total was thought to be 235 but three goals were deducted after research.

Rodriguez’s record came in the 1950s and is based on official games – while Paulino Alcantara holds the overall record of 369 goals including friendly matches.

Messi has now scored 54 goals this season, beating his record from last year - and looks like breaking the 60 goal barrier before he is finished.

Despite scoring three goals at the Nou Camp, Granada could not get close to Barca who have shortened the gap on Real Madrid to five points – although their rivals have a game in hand.

PUYOL: ABIDAL WILL RETURN FROM LIVER TRANSPLANT...

Barcelona captain Carols Puyol is convinced that France international Eric Abidal will return from having an operation for a liver transplant.

The 32-year-old will have a transplant in the next few weeks, despite starting 20 games in La Liga this season.

Puyol admits the news had been a ‘rude awakening’ to the Barcelona team while praising the left-back as an inspiration whose ‘attitude is an example’.

“It’s a major blow. We had the news last season and now we get it again. But this will make us even stronger,” insisted the Spaniard.

The last time that Abidal returned to the team after recovering from the tumour, he played in and won the Champions League Final against Manchester United.

BAYERN IN SEVENTH HEAVEN AGAINST FC BASEL...

Bayern Munich recorded their widest ever victory in the Champions League after humiliating Basle 7-0 at the Allianz Arena.
The Germans had been embarrassed 1-0 against the Swiss side in the first leg of their last-16 tie, but they completely outplayed their lowly opponents to progress to the quarter-finals.
Basle’s game plan to try and shut out the Bundesliga giants backfired after only 10 minutes.
Arjen Robben was in especially fine form, scoring the first and final goals of the game – while German international Thomas Muller was also on the scoresheet.
Otherwise, it was the Mario Gomez show as he continued his hot scoring streak by netting four goals following some superb creative play by Robben, Muller and Franck Ribery.
The closest Basle came was having a goal from first-leg hero Valentin Stocker ruled out for an apparent handball.

The Argentine was on devastating form as Barcelona destroyed Bayer Leverkusen 7-1 in the Nou Camp to storm into the last eight of the competition. With Pep Guardiola’s side having won 3-1 in Germany the outcome of the match was seldom in doubt. However, the style with which the European champions destroyed Leverkusen was stunning. Messi scored a hat-trick before the game was 49 minutes old and then added a fourth in the 58th minute and a fifth five minutes before the end of a horribly one-sided contest. Afterwards, Guardiola played down stories linking him with the post of Chelsea manager which will become vacant when Roberto di Matteo steps down in the summer.

Arsenal almost staged one of the great comebacks in the history of the Champions League when they overcame AC Milan 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium. Four down from the first leg at San Siro, Arsenal were three goals up by half time but could not force the fourth goal that would have taken the match into extra time. No team since Borussia Monchengladbach against Real Madrid in 1985 had overturned a four-goal deficit but Arsenal made the perfect start when Laurent Koscielny headed home a cross from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Tomas Rosicky made it 2-0 after 26 minutes and when Robin van Persie drove home a penalty just before the interval, Arsenal seemed favourites to go through. However, once Christian Abbiati had saved brilliantly from Van Persie on the hour mark, Milan recovered their poise and saw out the game.

Claudio Ranieri has insisted he will not quit as manager of Internazionale despite overseeing a run of games that has not seen them win in nine attempts. Inter are now 11 points adrift of Lazio in the third place that is the cut off point for Champions League qualification in Serie A. Ranieri has been given the public backing of president, Massimo Moratti, but should they be knocked out of the Champions League by Marseilles, it is hard to see him surviving despite signing a two-year contract in September. It is fortunate for Ranieri that Inter recovered from two goals down against Catania at San Siro on Sunday. However, the fact that it was the goalkeeper, Julio Cesar, and not Ranieri who gave the half-time team talk will not have strengthened his position.
