MESSI MAKES HISTORY AS BARCELONA SMASH SEVEN...
Lionel Messi made Champions League history when he became the first player in the competition to score five times in a single game. The Argentine was on devastating form as Barcelona destroyed Bayer Leverkusen 7-1 in the Nou Camp to storm into the last eight of the competition. With Pep Guardiola’s side having won 3-1 in Germany the outcome of the match was seldom in doubt. However, the style with which the European champions destroyed Leverkusen was stunning. Messi scored a hat-trick before the game was 49 minutes old and then added a fourth in the 58th minute and a fifth five minutes before the end of a horribly one-sided contest. Afterwards, Guardiola played down stories linking him with the post of Chelsea manager which will become vacant when Roberto di Matteo steps down in the summer.
