At the order of the Supreme Court of Switzerland, FIFA has released a document detailing how Joao Havelange, president, and Ricardo Teixeira, his right hand man, took huge bribes. Joseph (Sepp) Blatter's predecessor earnt at least 1.24 million euros while Ricardo Teixeira raked in a whopping $ 10.6 million. Other payments, in the ball park of about 18 million, were made to accounts linked to the two Brazilians.
Regularly disturbed by rumours of corruption, FIFA is not to recall his former top officials. Its president, Sepp Blatter, is inevitably the subject of virulent criticism since taking office in 1998. Ever since the awarding of the World Cup to Qatar last year, FIFA’s credibility has been greatly reduced and little faith can be put into officials who have been stubborn in doing nothing to change their negative image.
The case of Joao Havelange (now 96) and his vice president Ricardo Teixeia has sparked relative panic within FIFA headquarters in Zurich. This can only enhance the negativity FIFA seems to attract.
