| AZ ALKMAAR TIGHTEN HOLD ON EREDIVISIE LEADERSHIP |
AZ strengthened their grip on first place in the Eredivisie on Sunday with a 3-1 win at VVV-Venlo while their main rivals were losing points.
Rasmus Elm, Adam Maher and Simon Poulsen lifted AZ four points clear of the chasing clubs as Twente were held to a 2-2 home draw by bottom side Excelsior and Ajax went down 1-0 at Groningen, their first league defeat since March.
PSV capitalised on these two results to climb into second place on goal difference ahead of Twente with a 2-0 victory at NEC, Zakaria Labyad and Tim Matavz sealing the win in the last five minutes.
In Portugal, meanwhile, Porto returned to the head of the Liga Zon Sagres on goal difference from Benfica with a 3-0 success at Academica thanks to goals from Walter, James Rodriguez and Fredy Guarin.
