Lionel Messi was crowned European footballer of the year for the third time, celebrating a year in which the 24-year-old Argentine has dominated the game. Messi’s victory had been expected and he joins Michel Platini, Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten in having won the Ballon d’Or three times. His record in 2011 has been astonishing. Messi played 70 matches, scored 59 times and produced 37 assists. What gave him the edge over Cristiano Ronaldo, who did not attend the ceremony in Zurich saying he needed to prepare for Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey tie against Malaga, was what he helped Barcelona to achieve. In 2011, Barcelona won the World Club Championship, the Champions League, La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup. Messi also produced the two performances of the season, in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid and the final against Manchester United.
