CHELSEA STRUGGLE TO OVERCOME 10-MAN BENFICA...
Chelsea overcame the ten men of Benfica to win through to a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona. The European champions will be strong favourites as Chelsea have only ever won one of their five previous European Cup semi-finals. This time, Chelsea, who had won the first leg in Lisbon 1-0, won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, although it was not as straightforward as the scoreline suggests. Chelsea went ahead through a Frank Lampard penalty and when Benfica’s captain, Maxi Pereira, was dismissed for a second bookable offence, their task looked very simple. However, Benfica fought back to equalise from a corner through Javi Garcia and with five minutes left Jorge Jesus’ side knew that another goal would see them through to the semi-finals. However, as they pushed forward, Chelsea counter-attacked and scored the winner through Raul Meireles.
