Euro 2012 finalists hoping that Spain are not the force they were last year after their surprise 1-0 defeat to an inexperienced England team at Wembley should not read too much into the loss.After all, it was the fourth reversal the reigning European champions have suffered in friendly internationals since winning the 2010 World Cup, with Italy, Portugal and Argentina having also beaten them.
More importantly, Vicente del Bosque’s side have won their last 14 competitive games – and that is the statistic that will be most relevant when they begin the defence of their European title next summer.
Indeed, had Cesc Fabregas and David Villa been more precise in their finishing on Saturday night, Spain would have gained at least a draw.
