Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Xavi have been shortlisted for the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or award.The prestigious award, presented by FIFA and France Football magazine, was claimed by Messi last year and the Argentine playmaker is favourite to retain the title of the world’s best player.
Messi scored 53 goals in all competitions as Barcelona won their third successive La Liga title and reclaimed the Champions League.
Xavi was also instrumental in Barcelona’s dominance during 2010-11, creating many goals and cementing his position as the world’s best midfielder.
Ronaldo also scored 53 goals but Real Madrid’s failure to overcome Barcelona in the league and losing to their great rivals in the Champions League semi-finals will count against the Portuguese.
