Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been named French player of the year by France Football magazine.Despite struggling to live up to his reputation when he first joined Real Madrid, Benzema has improved under Jose Mourinho and scored 26 goals during the 2010-11 season.
Benzema’s most recent goal was the fastest ever scored in el clasico when he netted after only 23 seconds, although Barcelona eventually won the game 3-1.
“It is a pleasure to win an individual trophy. When I see the previous winners – (Zinedine) Zidane, (Theirry) Henry and the other major players – it makes me proud to join them on the list,” he said.
Benzema is expected to spearhead France’s attack at Euro 2012 – after being surprisingly left out for the 2010 World Cup.
