If there was one game that symbolised the changing balance of power in English football it was the October afternoon that Manchester City went to Old Trafford and won 6-1.Sir Alex Ferguson had suffered his biggest defeat in 37 years as a manager and it was Manchester United’s heaviest home defeat since they lost 7-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1931.
The destruction was begun by Mario Balotelli, who after repeated criticism of his lifestyle revealed a T-shirt that said: “Why Always Me”.
He scored again and as Manchester United began attacking to try to pull the game back, City’s lethal strike force destroyed a back four that had seen Jonny Evans sent off. Ferguson was humiliated as never before while City began to believe they could win the title.
